The song of now

Discover the joy, freedom and connection of singing together through collaborative vocal improvisation.

The Song of Now is an invitation to step out of your head and into the present moment. By singing together without predetermined music, lyrics or expectations, we access a deeper awareness of ourselves and one another — listening, responding, and creating in real time.

Through this shared vocal exploration, we reconnect with our authentic voice and creative spirit. Each gathering is unique and alive, shaped by the people who come together. The experience can be playful or profound, joyful or tender, grounding or expansive — often all at once. It mirrors life itself and gives us creative tools for our daily lives.

What to expect

  • A welcoming, inclusive space — no previous singing experience required
  • Guided group vocal improvisation and practices

  • An opportunity to be fully heard, without judgement

Ruana now travels nationally leading her own style of vocal improvisation. She has collaborated with FEAST arts festival in Malvern, Join the Song, Singing for Joy – Rewilding the Voice and created Synthesis with 5Rhythms teacher Neil Pinnock and breath worker Nathalia Westmacott.

About Ruana

Ruana has been leading singing groups for people of all ages since the age of 14, guided by a lifelong relationship with voice, music, and shared expression. When Ruana discovered vocal improvisation in 2022 this marked a profound turning point and a new life calling was immediately presented to her.

Since then, Ruana has undertaken an immersive and dedicated period of study into the mechanics, forms, and facilitation of vocal improvisation, training with internationally recognised teachers Rhiannon (Vocal River), Guillermo Rozenthuler (The Singing Village), and Briony Greenhill. Her development has been further supported through Arts Council funding, enabling her to deepen both her practice and her work with communities.

Ruana now travels nationally, sharing her own distinctive approach to vocal improvisation — one that weaves together presence, play, musicality, and deep listening. Her work invites people into authentic expression, connection, and creative freedom, regardless of prior singing experience.

She has collaborated with organisations and projects including FEAST Arts Festival (Malvern), Join the Song, Singing for Joy – Rewilding the Voice, and co-created Synthesis, a collaboration with 5Rhythms teacher Neil Pinnock and breathwork facilitator Nathalia Westmacott.

At the heart of Ruana’s work is the belief that everyone has a voice, and that singing together is a powerful pathway to belonging, transformation, and aliveness.

What People Say

“I went from completely terrified at the thought of singing solo, to looking forward to my turn to sing solo! I love seeing what wants to flow through me and how it interacts with the magic that’s coming through my fellow singers in the moment. Ruana is a masterful facilitator who weaves playfulness, opportunities for bravery and musical learning into The Song of Now.

I always feel expertly held in Ruana’s space. She has a wonderful way of guiding us to exactly the right places. Sometimes it’s crazy, sometimes it’s musical, sometimes it’s profound. Everytime it’s a joy and privilege. Improv singing with Ruana is my favourite place to be” 💕

I love singing with Ruana.  She makes anything possible and everything safe.  It is challenging but enabling.  I never knew what was possible or what I had inside me until I sang with Ruana!  It is also fun  and the people gathered with her are lively and truely concerned for each other.  I love it!😀

“Working with Ruana again on the singing retreat was such a gift. Her presence is grounded, warm and deeply supportive, and it has helped shape the retreat into the safe, welcoming and adventurous space it has become.”

“I loved the structure and atmosphere of her vocal improvisation session, and the way she gently supports singers to stretch themselves and delight in making music with their own voice — often beyond what they thought possible.”

“Ruana brings a strong sense of trust, musicality and flow, and is incredibly supportive to fellow song leaders and participants alike. I would absolutely love to attend one of her retreats.”
